What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy substance present in your blood. In order to create healthy cells, your body needs cholesterol, but high cholesterol levels can increase the risk of heart disease. Cholesterol is carried through your blood, attached to proteins. This combination of proteins and cholesterol is called a lipoprotein. Your liver makes cholesterol for your body.

What are triglycerides?

Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood.

When you eat, your body converts any calories it does not need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells. Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals.

Types of Cholesterol

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL)

LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, transports cholesterol particles throughout your body. LDL cholesterol builds up in the walls of your arteries, making them hard and narrow.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL)

HDL, or “good” cholesterol, picks up excess cholesterol and takes it back to your liver.
