Urinary Health

The urinary tract is made up of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. The most common complaints are a urinary tract infection (UTI) or cystitis, and kidney stones.

Urinary Tract Infection symptoms are frequent urination, burning urination and an urgency to urinate. UTIs are often caused by the bacteria E. Coli. Women complain more often than men about UTIs and the reasons for this are:

• They have a shorter urethra so bacteria can reach the bladder more easily
• They tend to hold onto urine for a longer period of time than men (this is often due to hygienic reasons)
• Silk or polyester under ware can also contribute to the development of a UTI

Kidney Stones form due to too much of the chemicals within the body that prevent kidney stones from being dissolved. These chemicals are not properly excreted from the body and when they build up in the kidneys, they form stones that can block the flow of urine and cause extreme pain. Calcium is the most common substance that forms salts. This is caused by too much calcium in the urine. Diet can play a role in the development of stones. Medication can also play a role, as can a chronic illness such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), which can predispose a person to developing kidney stones.
