According to Tibb, up to 75% of illness is due to either poor digestion and assimilation of food, or due to poor elimination of waste products. Below are some of the most common digestive health issues.
Constipation differs between adults and children mainly due to the fact that the number of stools passed daily, in infancy and childhood, varies greatly. In children, organic causes of constipation are rare and in most cases constipation in children is due to a functional cause e.g. acute illness with dehydration, anal fissures, constipating medication and even stressful events related to toilet training. In adults, constipation is common and determining the exact cause is important.
Nausea is a feeling of sickness with an inclination to vomit and vomiting is the actual ejection of the stomach contents through the mouth. The causes are numerous and must be investigated.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder characterised by abdominal pain, discomfort and bloating, and constipation or diarrhoea. IBS is known as a functional bowel disorder because there are no specific anatomical changes noted, or objective tests that diagnose IBS. It is a change in the function of the bowel that presents with symptoms and the diagnosis is based on the symptoms presented.
